Exploring Baiae: The Underwater City of Roman Emperors

The submerged Roman city of Baiae (Baia), located in the Gulf of Naples near Pozzuoli, is an “underwater Pompeii” and the world’s largest underwater archaeological park.

Once a hedonistic, high-end resort town for Roman emperors like Caesar and Nero, it sank due to volcanic bradyseism, an extraordinary geological phenomenon that caused the land to gradually lower into the sea, thereby preserving luxurious mosaics, opulent villas, and exquisite statues 2–10 meters below sea level.

Baiae was renowned not only for its stunning views and pleasurable thermal baths but also for its lavish parties, where the elite mingled and reveled in a lifestyle of decadence, making it a symbol of wealth and luxury in ancient Rome.

Today, these submerged treasures offer a fascinating glimpse into history, attracting divers, archaeologists, and historians who seek to explore its depths and unravel the stories hidden beneath the waves.
